Body and Mind Reset for 2018

This is the time of the year that we often set intentions for how we want to treat our bodies, reconnect with ourselves, interact with others, and make room for what is to come.

Later this month I will be participating in and leading a New Year Reset for the Body and Mind. This reset will involve daily yoga practice, journaling, healthy eating, and meditation in order to take care of our life force so that we have more ease in the body and mind.

The reset will last 21 days and will begin on January 21 and end on February 11.

January 21 will be a day of observation and journaling.

January 22 - January 27 will be a time of elimination (taking out foods that strip the body of nutrients and foods that create more work for the digestive system) and rebuilding (adding in foods that are nutrient dense and health sustaining). You will take out added sugar, alcohol, coffee, dairy, and gluten. (I also recommend taking out meat, but if you want to leave it in - eat fish, chicken and lean meats that are organic and free-range).

January 28 - February 3 will be a time of simplicity and mindfulness. You will participate in daily intermittent fasting, drinking green drinks daily and eating simple foods of brown rice, veggies, nuts, seeds, and fruit. You can also eat beans, but they must be pre-soaked for at least 12 hours and slow cooked so that they are the most digestible and friendly to the body. Intermittent fasting is when you do not eating for 12 - 15 hours daily - this will be explained in greater detail.

February 2 - 11 will be a time of reflection and decisions about how to move forward with healthy eating, exercise, daily yoga and meditation practices, as well as continued self-reflection.

The purpose of this Mind and Body reset is to create some patterns that sustain your life force in a healthy way, learn nourishing eating habits that feed your body, experience the benefits of intermittent fasting, and slow down through daily yoga, meditation and writing practices. You will be guided along the way with support and accountability.

The cost for participation is $95. The cost includes recipes, phone consult, guidance throughout, daily writing assignments, support of the group, and a yoga and nutrition class on Monday, February 12 from 7:30-9:30 pm in Studio C. In this class we will discuss how the 21 day reset went and how to move forward with a healthy body and mind.

If you'd like to be a part of this reset, please RSVP and mail in payment to Melanie Green, 1516 Edith Street, Berkeley, CA 94703 or pay via venmo @MelYoga by January 17. If you'd like to participate, but cost is an issue, please don't hesitate to be in touch.

The class will include yoga practice, nutrition, and group process. The yoga practice will include both active and passive poses, as well as meditation. It is a class that is suitable for all levels of yogis. It will provide support, discussion, yoga, and encouragement to live well and eat well. Between each meeting, homework will be given in order to make the most out of each session.

Intro to Ashtanga Mysore Style with Leigha Nicole

At the Berkeley Yoga Center (Studio C)

Ashtanga Yoga taught in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois is a deeply transformative system of yoga. Different sequences of postures (asana) are linked together with the fluid movements of the sun salutations (surya namaskar). These are practiced with a meditative rhythmic breath technique (ujjayi pranayama) along with the cultivation of deep core strength (bandhas).

The most personal and individualized way to practice Ashtanga Yoga is in an environment called "Mysore style" classes. This workshop will focus on this particular format and prepare students to attend a Mysore Ashtanga class with a solid primary series foundation. Upon completion of this workshop, special discounts will be offered for the Mysore classes at Berkeley Yoga Center.

Cost: $75

Technical inquiry will include working with and adjusting different body types, principles of anatomy, and reviewing alignment and energy movement in the asanas.

The core poses of the Ashtanga Primary Series will be the basis for partner work and group discussion. This workshop is offered as continuing education for yoga teachers as well as students who wish to deepen their practice.

The Primary Series is a lifelong practice. It is Yoga Chikitsa, a yogic cleansing program that detoxifies the body, realigns the structure and begins to focus and soothe the mind. In the first part of this workshop, we will look closely at the asanas of the primary series. We will have an opportunity to explore ways to modify each of the postures to ensure that everyone can work with this powerful healing practice. In the second part of this workshop, we will explore some of the important Sutras from the first book, Samadhi Pada; Pattabhi Jois said that Ashtanga Yoga is Patanjali Yoga. . . that to understand this practice, you must study the Sutras. We will also use this time to explore the language of Sanskrit and begin by chanting the Sutras we are discussing.
